SHAKTI PROGRAM
In the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, global prevalence of anxiety and depression increased by a massive 25%, according to a scientific brief released by the World Health Organization (WHO). This increase in the prevalence of mental health problems coincided with severe disruptions to mental health services, leaving huge gaps in care for those who need it most, especially in India where the numbers are staggering. One study reported that India has about 0.75 psychiatrists per 100,000, whereas the available psychiatrists are 6 per 100,000 in Western countries (Garg, Kumar, & Chandra, 2019) .
Our training and capacity building program was born to equip front-line workers providing care in marginalised communities with an increased understanding of mental wellness, mental health challenges, trauma and emotional regulation. We customize our trainings based on each individual organisation's need, thereby allowing the beneficiaries to provide psychological first aid in communities without access to mental healthcare.
