COGNITIVE BEHAVIOUR THERAPY
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is an evidence based treatment for chronic, recurring, and challenging mental health issues such as anxiety, depression and PTSD. CBT focuses on identifying negative patterns of thinking; how to change unhealthy thoughts to healthier beliefs; and healthy thoughts leading to desirable action/outcome.
Objectives of the training:
Understand the key components of CBT practice.
Implement rapport-building tips and tools to improve client trust.
Learn CBT psycho-education to elicit motivation in clients
Develop case conceptualization
Modify dysfunctional self-talk, thoughts and core beliefs
Assess behavioural techniques to modify maladaptive behaviours.
Recommend behavioural methods to overcome intrusive, obsessive/compulsive thoughts

TRAUMA FOCUSED COGNITIVE BEHAVIOUR THERAPY (TF-CBT)
Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is an evidence-based treatment for children and adolescents impacted by trauma and their parents or caregivers. Research shows that TF-CBT successfully resolves a broad array of emotional and behavioral difficulties associated with single, multiple and complex trauma experiences.
Objectives of the training:
1. Describe TF-CBT
2. Understand inclusionary and exclusionary criteria for TF-CBT
3. Understand the importance of client engagement in the treatment process
4. Learn and practice the three phases of treatment of TF-CBT

SOLUTION FOCUSED BRIEF THERAPY
Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is an evidence-based, straightforward, result-driven approach to therapy that helps clients become “unstuck” by drawing on their already existing resources and personal strengths. Through easy to learn, simple interventions and principles, SFBT offers a whole new perspective of what therapy can do.
Objectives:
Utilize specific solution-focused strategies, including miracle and best-hopes questions to improve clinical outcomes.
Implement solution-focused interventions that shift the conversation from “problem talk” towards solution-oriented talk.
Assess the practical benefits and limitations of utilizing a solution-focused treatment approach with clients
Suggested schedule: About 4 sessions of 2 hour each
CRISIS COUNSELLING SKILLS
Clinicians deal with mental health emergencies at some point or another. It is not a question of if a crisis will occur, but when. Sadly, crisis intervention remains a neglected component of training and supervision. Now more than ever, it is critical for all helping professionals to correctly assess and “triage” various types of mental health emergencies. Knowing practical strategies for crisis management ensures the safety of both clients and therapists.
Objectives of the training:
Maximize knowledge of ethical implications of mental health emergencies.
Demonstrate how to complete a thorough mental status interview to better assess for psychosis, suicide, homicide, and violence.
Display knowledge of crisis intervention strategies.
Describe appropriate clinical documentation to minimize legal liability.
Develop effective safety plans for mental health emergencies to promote client safety
Create awareness of burnout, vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue and strategies to promote healthy self-care.
Suggested schedule: About 4 sessions of 1.5 hour each
UNDERSTANDING TRAUMA
This basic training is geared for professionals who deal with victims of trauma in any capacity. Trauma can have debilitating emotional/social/behavioural impacts on a person’s life. Long term, multiple trauma can add to the problem. This training will equip professionals to gain an understanding of trauma, it’s impacts, techniques that are helpful in dealing with and supporting traumatised individuals.
Objectives:
Define trauma
Explain the impact of trauma on the brain and behaviour
Determine psychological first aid to ensure safety for clients who have trauma
Utilize strategies to assist trauma clients with issues of emotional control and discipline.
Implement exercises and grounding techniques to help clients develop emotional regulation skills
Choose appropriate strategies to help clients prepare for trauma triggers
Create a plan for building resiliency in clients to facilitate growth and recovery.
Suggested schedule: Two sessions of 2 hours each
PARENTING FOR TRAUMA SURVIVORS
The purpose of this training is to help counsellors in supporting parents who have experienced domestic violence, so that parents can understand the impact on their children and themselves; to teach parents to talk to and listen to their children about their experience of the violence; to encourage children's resiliency, and to support parents in strengthening their relationships with their children.
Objectives of the training:
1. How to explain effects of domestic violence on children to survivors
2. How to help survivors learn ways to talk to and listen to children about their experience
3. To help survivors understand how domestic violence affects them as a parent
4. To help parents support resilience and healing in children
